Magical Pot Pies and Other Kinds of Cosmic Creativity

I think one of the most affirming, amazing, comforting, soul nourishing reasons for being alive is cooking. Nothing pleases me more than to get my grubby little hands into the food that sustains me.

Cooking is my craft, one of my most passionate, creative outlets. Even if I’m not particularly good at it. I start off by lighting a candle over a clay altar of an abundant harvest goddess, that I decked out with mini wind chimes I strike throughout the process, beautiful votive candle holders, and a purple cloth with swirls of blue underneath it all. I then say a prayer of gratitude, and to clear anything that isn’t pure love out of me so I can cook this meal with the highest vibe. Then I put on one of my favorite shows to have in the background, or play my cheesy 70s easy listening music, and I get crackin’.

I peel, I cut, I prep, I taste along the way. I make the biggest fucking mess you can possibly imagine. I mean there are butternut squash skins in my hair when I’m done. And when I have to mix, I add in prayers and spells while stirring clockwise, infusing my own magic into this food that is going to be so nourishing to me. I have wooden spoons that I wood-burned with swirls and magical symbols on it. I have cups and plates alive with goddesses, wolves, deer, coyotes, mermaids, moons, sacred symbols, and honeybees etched on them that hold the food in the most sacred way.

And recently, I got these magical symbol cookie cutters that I’m attempting to put on these gluten free veggie pot pies I’m making. I am picturing pies with triskelions, runes, moon phases, and the evil eye (which actually ends up looking like a huge boob but, let’s be real, that’s equally as amazing).

Cooking is my thing. But no matter what your craft is, or how messy or good at it you are, let yourself get lost and be authentic in your process. Let this creative fire burn out of you in the most real way it can. It stokes this passionate love affair with life however mundane the tasks at hand. Cooking for me is a moving meditation, a totally unique and authentic ritual, and one of the most powerful and expressive forms of prayer I have.

And it also helps that I get to eat it all afterwards. I even leave a little bit for Spirit to taste.

What is your cosmic form of creativity? Something you love to do and don’t really have to worry if you’re good at it? Something you don’t make any money off of, you just simply love to do it? And how can you make it even more intentionally magic?

The things you love are the ultimate forms of prayer. Your passion elevates the power of your prayer. Transform what you love into a way to connect even deeper with yourself, spirit, and magic.
