Ceremony, Tools, and Astrology for January’s New Moon and Partial Solar Eclipse
Happy new moon, beloveds! New moons are a time when the earth’s soil is the most fertile. It is a new beginning, a time to plant the seeds and watch them grow. In the hard-working sign of Capricorn, this one is oriented around business and work.
This new moon in Capricorn is paired with a partial solar eclipse. This new moon is a potent opportunity to think about the work you do in the world. What is it that you want to truly set out? Are you on the right path that feels good to you? Do you believe in what you are doing? Is what you are doing sustaining you on a physical, emotional, and financial way?
Tonight, get clear about who you are and where you’ve come from. Although tonight is a new moon, eclipses are not the best time to set out any magic. Instead, let this night be a time of honor.
Things are shifting right now. Saturn and Pluto are dancing closely with the sun and moon, and all this planetary energy means that it’s a release of the way you think things should or could be, and an embracing of the way things are. Reflect and honor your past and what it took to get you here. Be curious but not judgmental about anything. What feelings are coming up for you? What stories have you been telling yourself that are based on your own predictions? Are you happy with the person you are now? How can you forgive yourself from past mistakes? How can you self -correct and honor your path at the same time? With the new year comes these thoughts and the pressure to shift, but what if you honor and acknowledge instead? Here we go:
Here are some tools for tonight:
Tarot Card: Justice
Oh, sweet Justice. This card can have someone quaking in their boots. When this card shows up, it’s a sign to take accountability and responsibility for your choices and decisions. Well, there’s good and comforting news here —justice is about mercy, not cruelty. All negative self-talk and self-punishment stops here, with her. She is supporting you to reach your most authentic, powerful self through discipline and working from a place of power. She asks you — how am I being unjust to myself?
Justice steps in and helps you make the decisions that matter most and that hold the most weight. She helps you carefully weight things out to suit your needs. She’s here for you, and this archetype is in you already. She’s so excited to see you flourish and get clear on your path.
Stone: Moonstone
Moonstone is a nourishing, yin energy that is known to aid in healing, balance, and intuition. It reminds you of the joy of sensuality while protecting you and leading you back to your own intuition and life path.
Hold your moonstone in your hand while you process your emotions and self-care tonight. Tune into its healing beams and feel them wrapping around you. Drop into your senses and feel the stone get warmer in the palm of your hand. Access the juiciness of life by tuning into it tonight.
Essential Oil: Spikenard
Spikenard oil was used by Mary Magdalene to honor Jesus. Tonight, you can use it to honor yourself. This earthy, woodsy oil is grounding, relaxes the mind, body, and spirit, calms anxiety, and inspire feelings of love. It helps to clear out resentments and replace it with compassion, and nourishes energy blockages on many levels.
Anoint yourself with this sacred oil. Remember how it has been used for thousands of years. You are worthy of being honored. You are worthy of feeling good. You are worthy of being forgiven. And you are worthy of being, feeling, giving, and receiving love. (Check with your own intuition and a doctor before using any herb or oil you’re not familiar with.)
Herb: Chamomile
Are you feeling like connecting to the divine is hard for you? Or maybe you’re feeling uneasy about relinquishing control in some area in your life. When there is negative thoughts or perspectives or things just aren’t working out and you really think you need them too — you can call on chamomile. Chamomile helps to be open to receiving divine guidance. It also helps protect you, infuse abundance in your day, calm your mind and body, and helps to illuminate your path. Chamomile is one powerful little flower.
This healing herb can be steeped in tea, held, burned, or whichever way feels good to you. You can harvest her yourself or get her from your local herb shop. Check with your doctor and use your intuition before ingesting any herb.
Song — On the Sea - Beach House
Out on the sea we'd be forgiven
Our bodies stopped the spirit leaving
Wouldn't you like to know how far you've got left to go?
Mmmmm the unfolding. It truly can be scary. Exhilarating. Cosmic. Humbling. This song reminds you of the sanctity of the journey, the fleeting fantastic seconds that create our life. Through the fuckups and the wins, your own divinity and your sins — you are living an active adventure. Take a trip with this song and let the lyrics sit with you. Be moved.
Color — Black
Tonight, let’s honor the darkness of the night sky. Let your candle, clothes, paper, and other tools reflect the color black. In color magick, black is all about Saturn energy (which has a pretty big role tonight), and releasing negativity, bad habits, and blockages. Tonight’s about going inward and getting cozy, so let’s return to the darkness, the wombspace, in which we all came.
Environment and Pose
Make yourself as cozy as you can. This is going to be unique to everyone. Engage all your senses in the most comfortable way. Make the lights the way you prefer, put on your most comfortable jammies, make the scents just right, and get in a position that supports your unique body. Tonight is all about caring for you, uniquely and wholly. As long as you feel grounded and supported by your environment, you’re doing it right.
Here’s my ritual for tonight:
Step one:
Get sensual. Put on a beautiful scent, wear something that feels nice on your skin, put on your music, get in a comfortable position, make a nourishing cup of tea. Unwind. Breathe. Feel into it. You’re here, alive, present, and about to make some magic happen for yourself. Welcome.
Step Two:
It’s time to ground out. Take a breath. And another one. And then the deepest one you can. Feel that? It’s the feeling of you coming home to your body. Eclipses can cause lots of unrest, lots of anxiety, and lots of shadowy feelings. Remember that you are honoring yourself deeply tonight, in all that you are and all that you have come from. Take another breath. If you can go outside, plant your feet on the ground and take a breath there, too. Breathing is cliché for a reason — because it works. It sends a physical response to our bodies that everything is okay. Be your own caretaker here and feel into it. Breathe.
Step Three:
Eclipses can bring up shadowy feelings. Tune into that.
What are you anxious or feeling weird about?
What do you fear?
What are you judging about yourself and your past?
How can you forgive yourself from past mistakes?
How can you self -correct and honor your path at the same time?
Let’s remember the justice card here. If you have found yourself in negative self-talk, are feeling overly judgmental of yourself, or beating yourself up — simply stop. Sounds too easy, right? But stop the hamster wheel right now. Instead, engage your senses. Put on a yummy scent, taste something delicious like a teaspoon of honey or some tea, feel the ground beneath you or heat from an open fire, listen to the rain or wind outside your window. You are not alone in these feelings. I personally have never met a single soul who hasn’t beaten themselves up for something, or lived in moments of fear. Instead of feeding into the fear, return home to you. Get back into your body. Shake it off.
Step Four:
We’re stepping into the winds of change here. This is the start of eclipse season, and things are about to shift for the next few months, specifically with Cancer and Capricorn energies, which are all about work and home. Sometimes a shift in the way things were can be overwhelming. The good news is, we’re all in this together. And you have anchors that can ground you out when pivotal moments can throw us for a loop. Discipline is actually nourishing right now, but as I like to call it, devotion. If you’re truly devoted to something, you do the work to sustain and nourish it. In this case, be devoted to yourself and your path over the next few weeks. Take care of yourself by having a routine you stick to, a morning and nighttime mini ritual, making lists, and honoring the work that needs to be done. Discipline and work have boring and hard connotations to it, but in reality, it truly is an act of self love that grounds us and aids in our self-care.
Step Five
Your job tonight, and for the rest of this lifetime, is to be kind to yourself. Seek balance, baby. Settle into simplicity if that feels good. Honor yourself. Know your boundaries, and remember — your wounds become your most powerful medicine. Walk in authenticity and courage, my love.
In Conclusion
Make tonight beautiful, make it yours. This is your night. New moons allow me to go deep inside myself and let my truth surface. Sometimes that comes up through emotions, through ideas, or through desires… listen to them all. Moon cycles are opportunities. Harness this power to do the work that you’d need to do anyway, but now you are held and supported and turning it into ritual and magic. I love using this energy to gain self-awareness, strength, and sheer determination and clarity.
